My First Lesson a.k.a Golf Rehearsal
"The only person your playing against is yourself"
Michael Landgrebe
Just Show Up!
As you begin your golf journey, be gentle but assertive with yourself. Improving is a lifelong process that will evolve as will your skill, awareness, power, focus and putting motion. Give yourself enough space to grow and the time to learn. Pace yourself and trust your body. Follow your real instincts and learn to turn down the disempowering chatter in your mind.
Feeling fear or uneasiness? So What!
Like riding a bike, swimming, taking a dance class, meditating or anything else that you do for the first time you may feel like a fish out of water. It may take a conversation or two but it is worth the short term pain and uneasiness.
The great thing about golf is you always participate from where you are, from your ability, your truth, your honesty so it is only as difficult as you make it! Just let go and play with what is.
Thinking your not confident or skillful enough or good enough? So what!
A concern for many students is their physical skill set and current state of mind for results. You don’t need to be physically educated to play confident golf, just physically aware. You only need to be mentally flexible and determined. Just show up and focus on letting go, breathing, moving, and respecting your limitations. A confident golf exercise will expose your weaknesses and reveal your strengths. We learn so much from our weaknesses and become so much stronger by accepting them and working through them rather than running from them. You will be amazed that as soon as you release the rope, the tension in your body and mind and golf stroke will too and your putting motion will free up and so will your creativity. You will get better and learn how to express your game.
Worried about your experience compared to others? Don’t Be!
Golf is about your own personal progress and experience. It is not helpful to compete with anyone around you or with yourself. Through Confident Golf you are encouraged to learn acceptance and non judgment for where you are. That is where you begin from. You are where you are. Accept your limitations and strengths, they are what they are. Be challenged by discovering what your mind and body needs in each exercise or swing. We learn to be connected to our bodies through moving, by breathing, self-talk (the questions we ask), how we use our bodies and how we decided to be in the present moment.
Winners don't whine and Whiners never win.
Unlike most golf professionals who keep telling others what to do. I take the approach of why don't you.
Because I believe that most golfers already know what to do but can't because they are trying to to what others have told them to do.
What do I need?
An idea of why you play golf- why do you want to hit a small ball with a stick?
Bring water for proper hydration
Make sure you have a had a decent meal or if you need snacks come prepared
What to wear?
For the course walk wear comfortable shoes
Be prepared to work barefoot
How often should I "rehearse" my golf?
Just like exercise or losing weight, results through golf takes commitment and consistency. For the greatest results, practice most days of the week 4-6 developing a specific golf skill set.
